Navy Method Formula – Calculate It Yourself
The U.S. Navy Method uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. Here’s how to calculate it manually.
For Men
Calculate body density:
Density = 1.0324 – 0.19077 × log10(waist – neck)
Convert to body fat %:
Body Fat % = (495 / Density) – 450
Example: 35-year-old man, waist = 34″, neck = 16″
Step 1: log10(34 – 16) = log10(18) = 1.255
Step 2: Density = 1.0324 – 0.19077 × 1.255 = 0.792
Step 3: Body Fat % = (495 / 0.792) – 450 = 15.2%
For Women
Calculate body density:
Density = 1.2957 – 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip – neck)
Convert to body fat %:
Body Fat % = (495 / Density) – 450
Example: 35-year-old woman, waist = 29″, hip = 39″, neck = 13″
Step 1: log10(29 + 39 – 13) = log10(55) = 1.740
Step 2: Density = 1.2957 – 0.35004 × 1.740 = 0.687
Step 3: Body Fat % = (495 / 0.687) – 450 = 20.1%
Measurement Guide:
- Neck: Measure just below the Adam’s apple (men) / at the base of the neck (women)
- Waist: Measure at the navel level (men) / at the narrowest point (women)
- Hips (women only): Measure at the widest point of the hips
How the Navy Method Compares to Other Methods
The U.S. Navy Method offers a convenient, free alternative to more expensive body fat testing methods.
| Method | Accuracy | Cost | Accessibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navy Method | ±3% | $0 (free) | High – tape measure only |
| DEXA Scan | ±1% | $100–$200 | Low – requires medical facility |
| Hydrostatic Weighing | ±1.5% | $50–$150 | Low – requires specialized equipment |
| BIA Scales | ±5% | $30–$100 | High – home use |
| Skinfold Calipers | ±3.5% | $10–$50 | Medium – requires practice |
Note: The Navy Method is a reliable, cost-effective way to track body fat changes over time, though DEXA remains the gold standard for accuracy.
